Mastectomy Causes More Trauma Than Breast Cancer Itself
Reconstructive surgery expert Dr.Edward Chang from MD Anderson cancer center,in Houston said on the importance, and increasing affordability,of the procedure after cancer.

It is every woman's right to undergo breast reconstruction surgery at the time of breast removal.Mastectomy causes more trauma than cancer itself, and so it is important to deal with the issue comprehensively,"said Dr.Edward Chang, professor of plastic surgery at the Houston based MD Anderson cancer center.

Dr.Chang will talk about the latest technologies being used in the field of reconstructive surgery.According to the World Health Organisation, about 4,50,000 women fall prey to breast cancer every year across the world.

How does reconstructive surgery at MD Anderson Work?

While the main goal of cancer care is to cure the disease, some treatments can leave patients with a loss of function,or major changes to their bodies. This can result in poor quality of life. The centre for Reconstructive surgery specialists in procedure that restore normal function and correct physical changes caused by cancer related treatments. The center takes a multidisciplinary approach to care and works closely with patient's primary care teams. In most cases, reconstruction is performed immediately after the tumor has been removed. We aim to help prevent the trauma that women suffer from after mastectomy.

But cancer treatment, especially reconstruction surgery, would be a costly affair.

It's true that reconstruction surgeries are costly, but doctors across the world, including India, are looking at various methods to bring down implant prices. As far breast cancer is concerned, various institutions are working on breast conservation or reconstruction surgery, despite the cost factor.

How will MD Anderson's state-of-the-art techniques benefit patients in India?

MD Anderson has sister institutions all over the world. We have collaborated with 2000 institutes in 23 countries, including  Sir H N hospital and Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai,to exchange knowledge. Our experts have been working with the hospitals to guide development of a multidisciplinary cancer center. The aim is to bring all the researchers working on cancer together.

Are there any on-going clinical trials that look promising to you?

There are several clinical trials, including 125 immunotherapy  trials, which offer a lot of hope. With regard to the breast cancer, our expert are trying to understand if there is any another mutated gene responsible for breast cancer. For example,I know of this family in which both the mother and her daughters suffered from breast cancer. But all three of them did not have breast cancer susceptibility gene(BRCA)mutation. However, they would be having some other gene that caused the cancer in the family.A lot of experts are now focusing on gene mutation.

Did you visit any cancer hospitals in the city?

Since the symposium is organised at Sir H N Hospital,I met a few patients, saw the modular operation theater, and I was glad to see that doctors at H N are using the latest equipment. It shows that Indian medical institutes are using advanced technologies that will benefit patients.
